Direct care nurses endorse Mike

Pennsylvania’s largest union for direct care nurses, the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP), has endorsed Mike Waltner for US House of Representatives, District 3. “Mike is committed to guaranteeing healthcare for all Pennsylvanians, which is a top priority for our union of healthcare professionals. We see how the system is hurting patients and our hospitals, and Mike is prepared to fight for real change,” says Leslie McGary, RN and Co-President of Warren General Hospital Professional Employees Association.

PASNAP represents nearly 5,500 nurses and healthcare professionals in Pennsylvania, with members at Butler Memorial Hospital and Warren General.

While supportive of any approach that extends healthcare access to Pennsylvanians, PASNAP supports a single payer universal healthcare system. A single payer system would organize healthcare monies through a public agency while keeping delivery of healthcare private, similar to how Medicare works.

“From our perspective, the best healthcare system would funnel the greatest number of healthcare dollars to patients. We do not need to funnel money to health insurers who skim off huge sums for overhead and profit. Plus, we believe decisions about healthcare should remain in the hands of patients in consultation with their doctors, not private health insurers who regularly deny care,” Ed Grystar, PASNAP staff representative, said.

PASNAP recently affiliated with the National Nurses Organizing Committee, an 80,000 member RN organization that has been in the national spotlight for protesting health insurers’ such as CIGNA for denying care to patients. NNOC has endorsed a number of candidates who support universal healthcare, including Mike Waltner.

More and more professionals in the medical establishment support national health insurance. A survey released last week by the Center for Health Policy and Professionalism Research at Indiana University's School of Medicine showed that a majority of US physicians support national health insurance. Last December, the American College of Physicians, with its 124,000 members endorsed a single-payer national health insurance program.
